In 2008, I graduated college, ready to teach young minds and messy hands in public school art classrooms around Chicago, IL. I was extremely fortunate to be offered a part time high school position teaching drawing and ceramics but after two years, our enrollment and budget dropped, and I was left to seek out greener pastures.
Again, incredibly fortunate, I was offered a full time position, this time with elementary art, but following America's economic blues, this position also turned part time and then came the school board protests and teary-eyed circumstances that many teachers know all too well, and I was left thinking, even if I love it... do I want to have to fight for my job every year?
No, I don't!
With very few strings attached and ready for an adventure, I found myself googling (yes, googling) "how to make money and travel." Cruises...travel writing...and finally, something I already knew a lot about - teaching! So I obtained a TEFL to pair with my teaching certificate, sold my ceramics and craigslisted everything else to afford a plane ticket, and off I went to a continent I had never been to. My goals: eat everything offered to me, learn more about world cultures, become a self-assured solo traveler, and find out more about myself.
Now, I am about to leave my home in Vietnam and travel through five countries, blogging as I go. Follow along to see what happens, as shenanigans are inevitable in my learn the hard way approach.
